Panerai’s All-Out Swiss Luxury Watches And The Reasons To Wear Them

Timepieceshave long been used for practical, aesthetic, and collectible purposes. They’ve been around since the 14th century, and crafting them has become an art form which has spurred leading watchmakers to strive for the highest quality, performance, and design.

Panerai is one of the biggest and most respected brands in the luxury watch segment. The Italian name has an excellent reputation in the market and is recognized for pieces that combine the incomparable Italian design with the excellence of Swiss technology.

Giovanni Panerai

How Panerai started

Panerai’s history started in Florence when the artisan and entrepreneur Giovanni Panerai opened his first watch atelier in 1860. Giovanni left his legacy to his son after he passed, and many of the original documents were lost in the floods which assailed Florence in the 60s.

Conversely, some things about Panerai have never been forgotten. Less than 50 years after its founding, Panerai was already recognized as a reliable provider of high-precision equipment such as compasses, watches, and diving lanterns for the Italian Navy.

Panerai was also one of the first to study glow-in-the-dark materials and the idea of adding them to dials. The research led to the discovery of zinc fluid and radio fluorescence, which later gave name to Panerai’s first collection, the Radiomir.

Why is Panerai special

Although Panerai is still present in Florence, it’s been handcrafting all its timepieces in Switzerland for decades. Panerai's formula for success is hard to come by—a recognizable emotional design, an interesting story and, more recently, its own calibers.

And while one could argue other brands share all these characteristics, Panerai remains one of the most well-accepted names on the luxury market, introducing new products in Geneva every year and immediately gaining even more admirers.

Panerai’s left-hand watches

Panerai’s left-hand watches

Panerai’s left-hand models’ story originates in the same place where the brand's history itself began. The Italian Navy’s frogmen needed to free their hands in order to better use a compass and depth gauge. That’s how, in 1940, the left-hand watches were born.

The navy’s scuba divers are still the main customers of Panerai, but that doesn’t mean the re-releases of left-hand models don’t attract lefties and fans of practicality the world over. Whether you go for a left or right-hand Panerai, both keep the vintage-inspired design and are equipped with modern calibers.

Collections:

Panerai Luminor

Luminor

The Luminor collection revives the spirit of Panerai’s models of the 50s. A large cushion case featuring Panerai’s unmistakable crown-guard only makes it more charming. The Luminor might offer time-only models (you’ll find GMT and chronographs in some models and they all offer water resistance) but elements of the sea, and their iconic designs make these must-haves.

Panerai Radiomir

Radiomir

The Radiomir collection comes with slim models in a variety of cage sizes, dial colors, straps, and materials. They bring power reserve indicators and have conquered many hearts with a retro-inspired look. Even though no one doubts this line’s superiority, the feel of the first Radiomir—designed for the Navy in 1936-is still palpable throughout its models. While passing trends circle the luxury market of watches, no one can deny a Radiomir is a watch to ease into your lifestyle and enhance it with quality and unique design.

Panerai Submersible

Submersible

The epitome of what one expects of diving watches, the Submersible line exudes style with nautical-inspired dials, gorgeous rotating timing bezels, off-the-charts water resistance options starting at 100 meters, and large cases to offer some of the most comfortable and functional fits that diving watches can offer. You’ll also have your pick of materials-there’s something for every diver.

Panerai Luminor Due

Luminor Due

An intriguing take on the Luminor line, but slender in comparison, the Luminor Due is definitely something to safely start your journey into the world of fine watchmaking. The aura created around Luminor Due watches instantly boost your confidence. These are models designed to communicate and interact with their owner while offering a dressy outline that’s very slender. And if you’re keeping an eye on something of collectible value, this is definitely one of Panerai’s more promising lines.
